Art Critique Reflection

1. Which projects did you review? The Beauty Within by Morgan Zimmer
2. Why did you select the Exhibit you critiqued? I felt that it was an interesting topic and my exhibit was Natural Beauty so I wanted to see if there were similarities.
3. What challenges did you face in writing the critique article and how did you overcome them? This was the hardest project in the class. It is hard to critique someone's work. I I tried to just write. I had to take a couple breaks and then look back through the PowerPoint many times and then write and then break again.
4. How do you feel about critiquing your peers work? I hate critiquing my peers work!
5. Would you like to read the critique your peers wrote about your Art Curation Project? Yes, I would like to hear opinions about my exhibit.
6. On a scale of 1-10 how would you rate your finished article and why? 7 I feel like I starting rambling and repeating to try to make it longer.
7. Did you enjoy working on this project? I enjoyed parts of it. I enjoyed creating the exhibit and really enjoyed looking through the exhibits and all the unique perspectives that people used. But critiquing is not for me.

Self Portrait

The Phillips Collection-Google Art Project

1. Why did you select the inspiration pieces? I thought the way they were was more realistic which is what I wanted to create. I chose some based on the fact that they were black and white.
2. Why did you select the media to create your self-portrait? I enjoy pencil and charcoal that is my favorite. I love the black and white look or portraits.
3. What challenges did you face in creating your self-portrait and how did you overcome them? I had a lot of difficulties. I felt like I redid the portrait many time. Constantly erasing and fixing. I am still not completely satisfied with my final. I also had difficulties finding portraits from the online gallery.
4. How does this piece represent you? I wanted it to be realistic. I wanted  to show me, nothing sugar coated, no makeup, actually this was right after I got out of the shower.
5. What elements and principles of art did you apply in this work? I tried to use texture in the hair. And I used different lines and shading to show contrast. I was going to use color and decided against it.
6. Did you enjoy working on this project? I did enjoy this. As difficult as it was I really liked this project. I love to draw and enjoy a challenge.
7. What do you think of your final artwork? Like I said before I am not fully satisfied with it. I like it but felt like I could do better but I would have started over. I put a lot of time in it and did not want to start over but the erasing was starting to show.

Module 15

Greenberg on Art Criticism: An Interview by T.J. Clark
This was not a good film. The whole time they are talking over each other and I am having a hard time understanding because of it. "You don't ask anything of art, except to be good.
I love that quote. Stay receptive and open. Talk about results and they settle everything. They talk about how the best art has been abstract but he personally is not a fan. It is interesting to me that although he does not like it he still respects how well it is doing. when art is good it is everything it should be. Place limits on nothing and relevance matters.  This video helps with that criticism project because he explains the importance of an open mind. He also explains how he has a distaste of abstract but how it is doing well. You still want to say whether something is good or bad but you have to be open.
Jackson Pollock: Michael Fried and T.J. Clark in Conversation.
To call someone a master is going to land you in hot water. Clark emphasized the historic attributes while Fried stressed the independence of its status. If you cant agree on the character of a painting you won't be able to agree on the significance of its effects. What does an ambitious painting now have to be? Historic can line up to quickly with the political. I am not sure if that will help with the project or not. I feel like they brought up good points but to me it seemed like they were just trying to prove their points and not criticize the painting.  This video was not bad as I said earlier they brought up some interesting points. I liked the conversation over the interview format. It was more interesting to watch with the movement, and you saw the piece that they were describing.

Natural Beauty

This was a very interesting project. I really enjoyed it. I liked looking through art pieces and deciding what will fit with my theme and title. Although it was very difficult to pick a theme and topic and find piece to match it was fun to do so. It was like a puzzle that we created and had to put together. When doing my PowerPoint, I placed a brown background on it, which is what I would want the wall color to be. Natural to me means earthy tones, brown is an earthy tone. I also placed my pieces with similar subjects together. I have portraits/ people in the first slides. Then, it moves to animals followed by the one piece of fruit. To finish out the exhibit I chose the landscapes. They are so different but also similar. The videos we watched in the beginning of this project were interesting but I felt like I thought more about the gallery visits that I did. I thought about if i had walls how would I place the pieces on the walls. I did not want the pieces on the wall at the same height. I wanted them at staggered heights.  I believe this project could have been even more interesting if we actually had pieces and walls and could actually physically create an exhibit. I know what I want my exhibit to look like but I am not sure if I portrayed quite what I want through my PowerPoint. I am glad we get to see other students projects and had the discussion. It was really interesting to read what others wanted to do. There was direction with how to complete this project but it was up to us to create the whole design.

Module 13-14

The Lowdown on Lowbrow:West Coast Pop Art- A lowbrow is a person regarded as uncultivated and lacking in taste. It includes a lot of naked women. Robert Williams created the term from a book. It could be looked at as lowbrow surrealism. The very beginning of the video was really strange. I do not understand how some of the pieces are art. I do really like the color in the rock posters. Tiki culture has the same origins as the Lowbrow. curators were not taking them seriously because they did not fell it was intelligent art. To me even if I do not like something I would give it the time to look it over and not treat someone terribly because of it. "I'll look at your slides if you unload my truck" that is bull. Lowbrow is more open to woman. Cd's and record covers helped to show their art, more people see the CD art than galleries. As different as I thought this video was, it was really interesting. The curators were not helping the artists, but it did not stop them from showing their art. I feel like it relates to the project because we all have different taste in art and one person might pick pieces that another person does not find as art.
Displaying Modern Art: The Tate Approach- The curators have had to move some of the art because it is so large and they had thousands more visitors than expected. One million viewers in the first month. We get to hear from the curators. Art is self contained.  There are 4 sections in the Tate Museum. This allows to have four themes. multiple terms to describe allows the curators to expand on the themes. The displays are supposed to be changed periodically. This video fits with our project because we see how a museum is designed by the curators. This was an okay video for me, I found it to be a little boring the way they presented the information.
Bones of Contention: Native American Archaeology- This video I do not feel has to really do with the project. I also do not feel that it was a good video. The finding of bones and human remains is interesting but it is not art to me because they are bones and remains. They were not made or created by an artists. I did find it interesting that they could tell what race a person was through the bones.
An Acquiring Mind: Philippe de Montebello and The Metropolitan-Yes they fit in with the Art Exhibition project because they are art curators. A museum is never finished.  Changes are constantly being made and pieces are being changed out. Some of the works like the half of the head I did not understand why that was such a wonderful piece. To me it looked like it could have been a great piece until it was dropped and broken, but it was designed that way. This was an okay video.

Module 12

Hockney on Photography was the fist video I chose to watch because I love photography. My dream is to have my own studio some day, so I enjoy watching videos on history of photography and different techniques. Drawing with a camera sounds like a very difficult technique but it looks incredibly interesting. I have done a project somewhat like that when I took a photography class, but my piece did not come out that good. You have to use more than one view point. IT is all about perspective and the way we look at art which is what I got out of the readings. He also talks about Van Goethe. It also talks about the Renaissance type works.  I really enjoyed this video because it was so many new ideas for me. I have a passion for this and felt like this is my favorite video of the class thus far. Taking pictures of a stop sign can be boring but the way he maneuvers to create his pieces are incredible. Even his paintings were wonderful.
Andy Warhol: Images of an Image was my second video because I have heard of him. I also read the description and felt like this is a video that I could enjoy watching. Right off the bat the Ten Liz's is very interesting. He died young. He wanted to be a tap dancer and not an artist. The screen image is a negative and really cool to see. The ink creates a positive image and can be reused a number of times. Look at the surface there is nothing underneath of Andy Warhol. This was an interesting video but I wish they didn't keep referring back to the same pieces. He produced several self portraits, he was narcissistic.

Art Gallery 2

Step 1: The Exhibition
Charles E. Burchfield: By Design
On view from September 12- December 29
In 1912, Charles E. Burchfield left Salem, Ohio ti attend the Cleveland School of Art. Burchfield's keen talent for design was quickly recognized by professors and peers. By Design explores these sensibilites which powerfully informed Burchfield's work throughout his career.
Snap Out Of It:Photographs by Missy Kennedy Cleary
September 12- February 2
Missy has been a commercial photographer for more than 30 years. In Snap Out Of It, the artist turned to her friends as subjects with the goal of creating extraordinary images of extraordinary women who are over 40.
Art In Craft Media 2013
October 12- January 19
Celebrates the 25th anniversary of the region wide biennial. The exhibition includes 75 works by 55 artists working in craft media; wood, fiber, glass, metal, and clay.

Step 2: The Gallery
The lighting ranges throughout the museum. When you first walk in the enterence is incredibly bright, open and welcoming. When you walk into the gallery, the light changes throughout the pieces. Some sections have more light then other parts. Some piece of art have spot lights. Illusion/Dillusion has lighting from the bottom. The walls also changed throughout the gallery. In the Margret Wendt section there were charcoal walls. Most of the walls were white, which gave me a brighter, cleaner feeling. The materials that the gallery were made out of seemed like normal drywall plastered and painted. THere was a stone curved wall closer to the Elmwood enterance to Buffalo State. The stairs to go to the second level were like a marble, stone. The walls throughout the exhibit to create spaces were very thick hald walls. I felt like the gallery flowed very smoothly. I could tell a lot of time went into the placement and executiuon of the exhibit.
Step 3: The Artwork
I did not notice a particular pattern to the way pieces were place. The smaller sections inside the gallery were  split up. Missy Kennedy Cleary was all photography and it was together down a hall way. Some pieces repeated themselves to make up a art piece. On the second floor, the black and white art, the princess looking ceramic dolls were like a mold that just kept getting filled. Some pieces spoke to me more and meant more to me based on where they were located. The pieces were made out of different materials. Some of the art pieces are out in the open, not really protected from the public. There are other pieces that are in a glass box so you can see all sides of the piece but cannot touch it. The last type of frames I saw were in the wall covered by a sheet of glass and a wooden frame along outside. There are plaques to identify the artist, date, materials, name and sometimes brief information. The pieces are easy to move around but are not to far where you are walking more than you are seeing art.
 Artist: Bethany Krull
Title of work: Under Dog
Media: Porcelain, wood, fabric
Date: 2012
A pig going over a hurdle. The big is a cream white color with a blue number over its back. The pig is on a tract that is green down the middle and blue on the outside. Some principles and elements that are line, color, emphasis and movement. It reminds me of high school when I ran hurdles. That is why I picked it as a piece. I also love pigs it is one of my favorite animals.  I keep thinking of the saying "When Pigs Fly." I feel like it is saying that anyone can move and be in a healthier state.

 Artist: Fabiano Sarra
Title of work: Eclipse Bench
Media: white oak, ebony, and milk paint
Date: 2013
A smooth wooden bench. It is a beautiful piece that  has a smooth texture. It flows from one point of the bench. The line on this piece is smooth with a slight curve. It reminds me of my home. I tried to pick pieces that really spoke to me. Although this is a piece of art, I want this for my house to sit in a garden. It is peaceful to look at.

Artist: Sunhwa Kim
Title: Time Capsule of Life
Media: wood, nature laquer, gold powder, mother-of- pearl
Date: 2013
I see a stool. It has three legs and a whole in the middle of the seat. I can tell it is made out of wood. The gold floral piece is emphasis. The swirled  cut out in the seat creates movement. There is line and I feel like the legs are also leading lines. The stool has color and contrast. The texture of the stool is smooth. The stool reminds me of a Hawaiian Island. It is peaceful looking and beautiful. Although the stool seat is not whole, it is still of value.

I enjoyed this art gallery visit. I have never been to Burchfield Penny Art Gallery before and am so glad that I had the opportunity to go. I was absolutely beautiful. Although it was interesting to see it from a different perspective, I felt like I looked more at the architecture and the not art.
